Poverty is a big factor of sex trafficking in India, the nation is the 67th poorest country in the world. Especially with the countless villages in India, there are many people in poverty who lack education, health, safety, and many other things.

To answer the question, why do traffickers do what they do? There is one answer: money. As mentioned earlier, India is a country with many poor areas that face economic crises. There are many citizens who are desperately in need of money, to the point where they are willing to do illegal activities to support themselves. According to The Muse, “Those who sell their children are not “evil” or “bad” people, they simply feel that they have no other choice.”

But, there are many different traffickers around India with different personal background stories. To fully understand why traffickers do what they do, we need to understand other parts and perspective of the story in order to find a solution, because, with the power that certain individuals have, there are multiple ways of telling a story.

How does power impact sex trafficking? There are many ways to answer and look at this question, but based on the perspective of the traffickers, they obviously have power over the victims, as stated by Fight The New Drug, “frequently use violence as a means of carrying out their activities.” Which makes it seem like the only way to gain power is to use threats and violence. Although that may be true for some traffickers, different people have different power depending on their personal background information, leading to multiple ways to tell stories of sex trafficking. Traffickers are trapped in a poverty cycle themselves, leading them to gain power and take advantage of vulnerable individuals. Therefore, it is important to address poverty to reduce trafficking in India.

In conclusion, the voices of the traffickers are important and relevant just like the voices of the victims. The public needs to realize that the traffickers are in a type of cycle of poverty just like the victims, it leads them to gain power as well as taking advantage of powerless victims, so poverty is a large factor that needs to be mentioned in order to reduce sex trafficking.
